I never really liked the radio, but

I miss Miss Sally's Playhouse.

These are two playlists I recorded from 2 summers ago:
July 3, 2005
June 19, 2005

People are slow to catch on to lots of bands, and I like listening to bands before they get signed to major labels. But Miss Sally was at least a year ahead of me with her new music.

I don't get you, art history

I just need to mention that in my art history class this semester, when I wrote a paper that I thought was my best, I got a crappy grade. But when I wrote a paper that I wasn't excited about, or incomplete according to what I had intended, the professor loved it.

I'm glad I'm done with that class. And I still have an LJ, what?

OMG, I finally have one of these:

http://www.m2onlinedesign.co.nr

Kind of still in progress, but mostly done. The sad party is I've been trying to put a website together for like a year and a half now, and this site really only took 2 days to make. That is, 2 days given that I know exactly what I'm doing and what I want.

I never heard of them before yesterday, and now I'm keeping my eye out for their upcomming new album this month. Love of Diagrams is from Australia, so if I could have gone to the show, I'm assuming I could have got an imported CD at regular price! But homework...

2 weeks in review

Screen & Things is finally over and now I can sleep.

My hands were dirty because I was teaching people how to print and I didn't get around to mine until it was time to clean up. Tran helped too (especially when I was stuck in the back washing screens because someone was supposed to bring a bucket, and she forgot even after I totally reminded her while she was loading the car). Thanks Tran! The people that I personally oversaw had flawless prints, so I'm very proud. In that sense, the people I instructed had better prints then me. I can't use it for a portfoltio because it's messy. Booo. Even after I ruined an awesome sweater and pair of jeans in the bathroom trying to wash 20"x30"ish screens in a hand sink, I still had a good time.

Now I can only sleep but eat too. After 8 hours of sleep and 3 meals over the last 2 days, I was starting to feel lightheaded. At this pointing, I'm literally thinking "If I passed out, then I wouldn't have to study for my midterms. Awesome!" I put so much time and initiative into this event. 5 hours before the program, I went back to Utrech myself and bought a pad of tacky paper because we had screens - but nothing to block the screens. Does that make any sense? I also brought my own masking take - the wide roll because it's excellent for screen printing - and dish soap to wash the screens. I told the person in charge of supplies that we needed lots and lots of masking tape. She told me 1 thin roll would be enough. It wasn't.

I really helps to know what you're doing so you can by the right materials. And no one pours the ink directly from the can onto the middle of the design and then spreads it in arbitrary directions until it appears to cover the design. Actually, a skilled eye can determine whether the ink has actually penetrated the screen or merely covered the surface, but I didn't want to say anything. Ok, I'll stop being arogant.

I made the promo, submitted the promo for printing, picked up the promo from printing services and posted everything myself. That's hardcore DIY.

It's amazing how much time you realize you have when all the pressure ends.

The deadline for the annual logo competition in approaching and I've got 2 designs ready. I've developed a lot in terms of applying design principles since this time a year ago.

Design #2 (version 2):

Design #1:

These are both certainly a step up from the one I made last year. Last year's was shit. Right now, I think I'm liking the second one a lot better. Submissions due on my birthday! UPB retreat on my birthday (fuck).
I would say that there are 3 reasons to visit Canada (and they've toured together, making the trip totally irresistible). But now there is only 1:

1. You Say Party! We Say Die!
<strike>2. controller.controller</strike>
<strike>3. Death from above 1979</strike>

The lead singer in controller.controller left, which means the band will never be the same.
MSTRKRFT is interesting, but I don't believe they can live up to the stature of DFA1979.

Hot Music This Fall

There sure are a lot of new releases this Fall. I don't really mean debutes but follow-up albums-- espectially from bands who we haven't heard new stuff from for 2 or 3 years.

Starting with some older bands, here's the ones that (officially) drop in September:
Ben Kweller - Self Titled
The Rapture - Pieces of People We Love
Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass
The Thermals - The Body The Blood The Machine
The Mars Volta - Amputechture
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain

And Brazilian Girls, a slightly newer band, are follwing up their amazing debut with Talk to La Bomb also hitting stores in September.

EDIT
Here are some October releases:
The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
The Killers - Sam's Town (if anyone cares, that is)

Stuck in the music loop

I just discovered a little cover band named Nouvelle Vague, but what's interesting is I had started listening to them before I even realized it was them.

First, Miss Sally's Playhouse featured a song from the new album last week. I liked it, but I didn't seem to catch on and I didn't pay attention to the name of the song or the band, so I didn't look them up on any music sites.

Then I heard another cover of Ever Fallen in Love, The Buzzcocks hit. I had heard the original and the Anti-Flag cover, but I didn't recognize the band who played this version although I recognized the song. I really liked this version and the other songs that this band played afterwords, so I commited to finding out who this band was.

So I found a list of all the bands that covered this song and tried to match the right version up to the song that I heard. This version of Ever Fallen in love was covered by Nouvelle Vague and is avaliable on their new ablum. I heard the song while in Urban Outfitters who was playing the whole album. This meant it was just a matter of time before I would actually start listening to Nouvelle Vauge because UO has to stay trendy and play new releases.

The thing doesn't suprising me is that I had already heard the band once and didn't know it was the same band that I was trying to find out about.

I want to take Urban Outfitters to school with me.

The one tangible thing that I'm going to miss after moving back to school is easily Urban Outfitters. Hands down.

It's such a luxury to have Urban Outfitters in the same city as you. I don't thing Cincinnati deserves one, but I'm certainly not complaining and I taking advantage of it. Today I visited for possibly the last time this summer and I was despresesed because I knew that I would never find the things I saw at any stores in Cleveland. I don't want to exactly calculate how much money I dropped there this summer, but I shopped on a regular basis (approx. every 2 weeks) starting the first full day I came back from school. I watched them gradually remodel the inside of the store and I can tell you how long each item has been on sale. My closet is starting to become a miniture Urban Outfitters.

I kind of gave up on doing any back to school sale shopping after I got to school because I know I won't find anything I like.
